WATER ACTIVITIES

My favorite aspect of Ohiopyle is the multiple water activities the Youghiogheny River Gorge has to offer. From those seeking relaxation to those seeking thrills, Ohiopyle has something for everyone. Though these activities are seasonal, they are a major attraction to the state park.

KAYAKING

Fast currents make Ohiopyle the perfect destination for white water kayaking. It is highly recommended proper training takes place before attempting. I recommend visiting Ohiopyle during the Over the Falls Festival . It is a daylong event filled with food and activities. However, my favorite part is the kayak competitions. Kayakers are judged based on speed or free style events as they paddle over the 18 foot waterfall.

RAFTING

Ranging from Class 1 to Class 5 rapids, the Youghiogheny is accessible to anyone. I have used the company Wilderness Voyageurs has been my preferred company in the area. They have over 50 years of experience and provide the necessary training and guidance to ensure the safety of their patrons. Some trips are guided, however, that does not necessarily mean a guide will be in your boat. They also offer the option for solo expeditions for experienced paddlers.

NATURAL WATER-SLIDES

This is probably my favorite activity in Ohiopyle! Meadow Run Creek offers a 300 million year old rock-bed that has been smoothed from centuries of rushing water. The downhill slope allows for a slide formation. The speed and length of the slide varies based on water levels. I recommend extreme caution in high waters. Regardless, you should expect to come out a little bruised. Wear water shoes or old tennis shoes to protect your feet.
