OHIOPYLE

Ohiopyle State Park is an easy 75 minute drive, south west of campus. Located on the Laurel Ridge, Ohiopyle encompasses over 20,000 acres of rushing waters and mountain views. It is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Oakland. So grab a group of friends and make a day or weekend trip to the great outdoors.

HISTORY

The name Ohiopyle is derived from the American Indian word Ohiopehelle meaning “white, frothy water”. This phrase perfectly describes the Youghiogheny River Gorge that runs through the heart of the park. These Youghiogheny river banks have witnessed many historical events. Fort Necessity is only a few miles away from the park and was the location of the first battle in the French and Indian War in 1754. Then in 1791, farmers in western Pennsylvania were angered by a tax on Whiskey. These farmers united and attacked against tax collectors. The Whiskey Rebellion ended when George Washington and a militia marched to Ohiopyle.
